It happens more often than you would think. You try to claim your business on Google and see a message that someone else already manages it. Sometimes it is a former employee, sometimes an agency you stopped paying, sometimes a previous owner, and occasionally someone you have never heard of. The good news is that Google has a process for this.
Search your business on Google Maps and click “Own this business?” or “Claim this business”. If someone else owns it, Google shows a partially hidden email address. That often tells you who it is.
If you recognise the email, such as an old agency or staff member, ask them to add your email as owner and then transfer primary ownership to you. This is the fastest route and usually takes minutes.
If you cannot contact them, use the “Request access” option. Fill in your details accurately and choose the access level you need. Google notifies the current owner, who has a limited time to respond.
Once you are back in control:
If the owner rejects your request, if the profile has been edited maliciously, or if the profile is also suspended, a specialist can save weeks. We handle ownership recovery alongside GMB listing recovery for clients across India.
The current owner usually has a few days to respond. If they do not, you may be offered a way to claim the profile, often after verification.
You can appeal through Google with evidence that you represent the business, such as registration documents, utility bills and signage photos.
They should not. Ask them to transfer primary ownership to your email. If they refuse, use Google's ownership request and appeal process.
Usually not. A new profile starts with no reviews and can create a duplicate. Recover the original if possible.
