Google Maps Ranking Factors: What Actually Moves the 3-Pack in India

Google names three factors. In practice a handful of specific levers decide who appears in the Indian Maps 3-pack. Here they are, roughly in order of impact.

Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. That is accurate but not very practical. Business owners need to know which specific things to change. This is the list we work through for every profile, roughly in the order of impact we see in Indian cities.

1. Primary category

The primary category decides which searches you can rank for at all. A dermatology clinic listed as “Medical clinic” competes poorly for “skin specialist near me”. Look at the categories the top three businesses use for your main search, and pick the most specific one that genuinely fits. Secondary categories add reach, but only for services you actually provide.

2. Distance

Google strongly favours businesses close to the searcher, especially for “near me” searches on mobile. You cannot change this, which is why no honest GMB expert promises the number one spot everywhere. What you can do is make your relevance and prominence strong enough to widen the area where you appear in the top three.

3. Reviews: count, rating, recency and content

  • A steady monthly flow matters more than a big total from years ago.
  • Reviews that mention your service and locality (“root canal at their Sector 35 clinic”) help relevance.
  • Replying to every review shows activity and care.
  • Bursts of reviews, or reviews from staff and family, can get filtered or trigger problems.

4. NAP consistency

Your name, address and phone number must match everywhere Google looks: your website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo, Zomato and industry directories. Inconsistent Indian address formats (“SCO 12, Sec-35C” versus “12, Sector 35 C”) are a quiet but common problem.

5. The website page behind your profile

Link the profile to the page that best matches your main service and city, not just your home page. That page should mention your service, area, address and phone, load fast on mobile and ideally carry LocalBusiness schema.

6. Completeness

Services with descriptions, products, attributes, hours including holidays, booking links and a clear description. Every empty field is a missed signal and a missed reason for a customer to choose you.

7. Photos and activity

Real photos of your entrance, interior, team and work, updated regularly. Weekly posts about services and offers. Answered questions. These keep the profile alive and improve the rate at which views turn into calls.

Links from local news sites, associations, suppliers and community pages tell Google you are a known part of the area. Quality beats quantity.

9. Behaviour signals

Clicks, calls, direction requests and how people interact with your profile are thought to influence rankings over time. Better photos, reviews and descriptions improve these naturally.

What does not work in India

  • Fake reviews and review exchange groups
  • Virtual offices to look central
  • Multiple listings for the same business
  • Bulk directory submission packages

Putting it into practice

Start with the category, NAP consistency and completeness. Then build reviews and activity steadily. Our GMB optimization checklist turns this into a step-by-step job, and how to rank in near me searches covers mobile searches specifically. Frequently asked questions

What is the most important Google Maps ranking factor?

Of the factors you control, the primary category usually has the biggest single effect. Distance from the searcher matters a lot too, but nobody can change it.

Do keywords in the business name help ranking?

They appear to, which is exactly why Google treats adding them as a violation. It is a common suspension trigger in India, so use only your real business name.

Do Google posts improve ranking?

Directly, only a little. Indirectly, they keep the profile active and improve engagement, which helps. They are also useful for conversions.

How many reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number. Aim to match or beat the three businesses currently in the 3-pack, with a steady monthly flow.
