A sudden drop in Google Maps ranking hurts quickly, because calls drop with it. The good news is that most drops have an identifiable cause. Work through this list in order; the first items are the most common and the easiest to check.
Google, users and competitors can suggest edits, and some are applied automatically. A changed category, address, phone or website can drop rankings overnight. Check your profile carefully and look for update notifications.
Fix: correct the information and check again over the next few days.
A suspended profile disappears from Maps or shows limited information.
Fix: see our suspension and reinstatement guide and recovery services.
Large changes can trigger re-verification or a temporary dip.
Fix: stop editing, complete any verification requested, and wait.
Maps results change with the searcher’s location. A drop “from home” may not be a drop near your shop.
Fix: check from several points across your area before concluding anything.
A new clinic, salon or store nearby with strong signals can push you down.
Fix: compare their category, reviews, photos and website with yours and close the gaps.
Sometimes legitimately, sometimes not.
Fix: build your own steady review routine, and report reviews that clearly break Google’s policies. See how to deal with fake reviews.
A redesign, new URL, broken page or removed address can weaken the signals Google sees.
Fix: make sure the linked page works, mentions your service and location, and has your address and phone.
A directory changed your phone number, or an old listing came back.
Fix: search for your business name and phone, and correct mismatches.
Google adjusts local ranking periodically. If many businesses in your area moved at the same time and nothing else explains it, this may be why.
Fix: focus on the fundamentals in Google Maps ranking factors. Chasing every fluctuation rarely helps.
It depends on the cause. Fixing a wrong edit can restore rankings within days. Recovering from a suspension or a strong new competitor can take weeks or months.
Indirectly, yes. They can outrank you with better signals, and in some cases suggest edits to your profile or post fake reviews. Monitor your profile for unwanted changes.
No. Find the cause first. Many simultaneous edits can trigger re-verification and make things worse.
Yes. Google adjusts local ranking from time to time, and some businesses move up or down without having changed anything.
