A growing number of people skip the search box and simply ask: “Which is a good physiotherapist in Pune?” or “Suggest a CA near Sector 17 Chandigarh.” The answer comes from ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini or Perplexity. If your business is not in that answer, you are invisible to that customer.
Nobody outside these companies knows exactly how they choose businesses, and anyone who claims to is guessing. But we can see what they tend to read and cite, and that gives clear, practical steps.
This is the foundation, especially for Google’s AI features. Correct primary category, every real service listed, accurate hours, a clear description and current photos. Use our GMB optimization checklist to check nothing is missing.
“Great service” helps a little. “Dr Sharma treated my knee pain after a sports injury, and the clinic near Baner was easy to find” helps much more, because it connects your business to a service and a place. You cannot write reviews for customers, but you can ask them to mention what you did for them.
AI tools like content they can quote. On your website:
Match your name, address and phone exactly across Google, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo or whatever directories matter in your field, plus Facebook and Instagram. Old addresses and old phone numbers create doubt.
Local news coverage, association membership pages, supplier “where to buy” pages and genuine “best of” lists all give AI tools independent sources that confirm you exist and are good at something.
Ask several assistants the questions your customers would ask. Note who gets recommended and why. If an assistant gets facts wrong about you, the fix is usually to correct the source it is reading, often your profile or an old directory listing.
We wrote a separate guide with India-focused examples, such as directories and review habits that matter here: getting recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Mode in India. For the Maps side, see Google Maps ranking factors in India.
No. There is no paid placement for local recommendations in ChatGPT answers at the time of writing. Recommendations come from what the tool can find and trust about your business.
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, very likely yes, because Google already uses Business Profile data for local results. Other assistants often draw on maps and review data too.
Nobody can honestly guarantee it. These systems change often and do not publish how they choose. What you can do is make your information clear, consistent and well reviewed.
Mostly it is good local SEO done thoroughly. The extra focus is on clear, quotable facts and consistent mentions across many sources.
